Laser treatment has been used for the removal of unwanted hair by physicians since 1998, and is FDA approved. Since that time, the technology used has dramatically improved, and patients, including those with dark skin are seeing very good and lasting results. Common treatment areas include legs, bikini line, armpits, upper lip and chin for women and chest and back for men. However, it is possible to treat unwanted hair in nearly any area.

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a high-intensity, pulsating beam of light to penetrate the skin and reach the hair follicle. The laser energy inflames the hair follicle causing it to go into a telogen, or resting phase, which inhibits future hair growth. So, several sessions are needed to get hair in all phases of growth to go into the resting phase.

Results may vary from person to person. The laser is most effective for patients with light skin and dark hair because the laser targets the melanin (or pigment) in the hair. Laser hair removal doesn’t guarantee permanent removal for everyone. Some hair may be resistant to the treatment, or may grow again after treatment-though new growth is usually finer and lighter in color. A study conducted in 2000 at the ASVAK Laser Center in Ankara, Turkey concluded that laser hair removal was 60 times faster, less painful and more reliable than electrolysis. Depending on the type of hair and skin color, multiple treatments have been shown to produce long term reduction of hair. Most patients require a minimum of 5 treatments at 4-6 week intervals.

To prepare for treatment, the patient should avoid plucking, electrolysis or waxing for 6 weeks prior to their initial visit. However, hair should be completely removed by shaving and the skin should be clean and dry. The treatment area should not be exposed to sunlight or a tanning light for 14 days prior to treatment. Some patients will feel a slight discomfort during treatment while some will feel nothing at all. Treatment talks place in a comfortable setting at our office. You will wear safety eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser light. Treatment can take as little as 10 minutes or as long as an hour depending on the area being treated. After treatment, use a sun block with SPF 30 or above. Some side effects may include redness, swelling, “hyper” or “hypo” pigmentation, blistering, scabbing, or a laser bruise called purpura in the treated area. These usually subside in a day or two and can be significantly reduced by applying a cool compress. Wash the treatment area gently with mild soap and water only.
Laser hair removal is considered to be cosmetic and is therefore not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment, though financing options may be available.
